Creating Meaning - 4 Powerful Sources

Meaning is the foundation for your unique ‘inner compass’

When we connect to our core values and identify what brings us meaning, we develop a new level of discernment, enabling better decisions in line with our values and wellbeing. The authors of Burnout, The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle define ‘meaning’ as “the nourishing experience of feeling like we’re connected to something larger than ourselves.” Meaning is created, not found. How do we create meaning in our lives?

Common sources of meaning:

  • Pursuit of dreams and goals that may leave a legacy

  • Service to others and something larger than ourselves

  • Intimate connection with others

  • Experiences of awe

Often, meaning comes from a combination of two or more of these. How do you create meaning in your life?

Knowing what brings meaning to our lives provides clarity and discernment, guiding our decision-making, boundary-setting, actions and pursuits. This opens up more space and energy for what’s most important to us.
